Are Backups Really Backing Up?

During the vulnerability assessment process, Cebic’s personnel investigated how backups were being performed at the client organization. It was discovered that a backup tape rotation had been established four years ago with the software set up to perform incremental backups each day. The secretary had diligently removed and inserted tapes each day for over four years.

Unfortunately, the company had no original backup to start with and the incremental backups on the tapes therefore were of no value in the event of a disaster recovery. Cebic technicians created a foundation backup and set up procedures for periodically testing backups for validity.
